New coach resigns

GAINESVILLE - The second choice for boys' varsity basketball coach at the new Chestatee High School has, like the first choice for the job, decided he doesn't want the job.

Leigh Block notified Hall County school officials of his decision in an e-mail they found upon returning to work Monday after spring break.

Block said "this was a difficult decision...I honestly felt that staying at Chestatee would only compound the mistake I made in accepting (the job) in the first place."

Block addeded "this is all it came down to: I made an immature and unprofessional mistake."

Now the coach at Walker High, Block said "the issue was which job I felt was the right one for me."

He went on to say he regrets that others "have to pay for this mistake."

The first choice for the job of boys' varsity basketball coach at Chestatee High, which is scheduled to open this fall, Rennie Bryner, resigned a few weeks ago because of health reasons.

Block was hired shortly after that and on March 21 participated in a "meet the coach" reception at Chestatee Middle School for students and parents who'll be involved in the boys' basketball program at Chestatee High next year.
