ATLANTA - Southern Company paid its former chairman and chief executive - A.W. ``Bill'' Dahlberg - a $2 million bonus and stock options worth $6.7 million last year. <br>

Dahlberg retired April 1st, 2001 after 41 years at Southern. The payments were released Wednesday in the company's proxy statement. <br>

Southern spokesman Marc Rice said Dahlberg's bonus was calculated as if he had worked for Southern for the full year. The policy applies to the energy concern's top five executives. <br>

Dahlberg also received a salary of $246,279 dollars for three months' employment, plus $784,212 in other compensation. <br>
<br>
His successor - chairman and chief executive Allen Franklin - was paid $855,969 salary, plus a $1.87 million bonus and other compensation of $47,556.
