ATLANTA - The state Board of Regents gave final approval Wednesday to 4 to 6 percent tuition hikes starting this fall. <br>

The state's public research universities the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and the Medical College of Georgia will cost 6 percent more, $1,395 a semester for in-state undergraduates, up from $1,316. <br>

Tuition will go up 4 percent next year at all other schools. At two-year colleges, tuition will rise from $640 a semester to $666 a semester for in-state students. <br>
<br>
The tuition hikes will generate about $23.4 million for the University System, which is facing $66 million in state budget cuts for the upcoming fiscal year. <br>
<br>
The board targeted out-of-state students for additional hikes. Out-of-state students at Georgia and Georgia Tech will pay an extra $500 a semester, on top of the 6 percent increase.
