Copy of Declaration of Independence to be displayed in Plains

By
PLAINS - An original copy of the Declaration of Independence will be displayed at Plains High School on April 24 and at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta from April 27-July 5.

The copy is one of 25 known to exist of the 200 original produced by John Dunlap, a Philadelphia printer, on July 4, 1776. It was discovered by a shopper folded up behind a painting he bought for $4 at a flea market in 1989 and purchased two years ago by television executive Norman Lear and his wife, Lyn, for $8.14 million.

The document is the focus of the Declaration of Independence Road Trip, a nonprofit, three-year effort to take the declaration across the nation. The tour, sponsored by The Home Depot, was launched July 3 at the Jefferson Memorial in Washington.

Former President Carter, who co-chairs the project with former President Gerald R. Ford, asked that the document be displayed in his hometown, said Meg Phee, associate director of the project.
