HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI - Daniel Stewart pitched his first complete game of the year Wednesday night as Southern Mississippi defeated Mississippi State 6-3 to earn a split of a two-game series. <br>

Southern Miss (25-14) trailed 2-0 after the second inning, but the Golden Eagles scored four runs in the sixth to take control. <br>

Mississippi State (22-13) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second when Brent Lewis opened the inning with a single, Steve Gendron followed with a double, and Michael Brown drove them home with a single to center field. <br>

The Bulldogs used a pair of fielding miscues and a two-out single by Brent Lewis to take a 3-1 lead in the sixth. <br>

Allen Winningham opened the bottom of the sixth with a double and both Jeff Cook and Griff Israel walked to load the bases. <br>

Clint Stoy hit a two-run single and Clint King followed with a run-scoring infield groundout to give USM a 4-3 lead. A fourth run scored on a wild pitch made it 5-3. <br>

USM got a leadoff walk in the seventh, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single by Cook to score its final run in the seventh. <br>
<br>
Stewart (3-2) allowed just three runs, two earned, on four hits. Chris Young (4-1) was charged with four runs on two hits to take the loss.
