BRUNSWICK - Business is booming at the Port of Brunswick. The port is trying to overcome its smaller size and shallower harbor and broadened its appeal by focusing on automobile manufacturers and grain shippers.
The Georgia Ports Authority says Brunswick port is poised to set another record for cargo this year.
The port recently lured Volvo Cars of North America, worth an estimated $500,000, away from the Port of Jacksonville. The automaker is expected to begin shipping 30,000 each year through the Amports facility in Brunswick as early as August.
Amports is one of three international auto processing companies at the Port of Brunswick.
Earlier this month, Porsche began shipping the first of an anticipated 16,000 cars and sport utility vehicles annually through Amports.
Porsche previously used Charleston, South Carolina for its Southeast import distribution center. Manager Barry Long says the German automaker switched to Brunswick to help streamline its shipping.
Two long-anticipated projects -- the new Sidney Lanier Bridge and deepening of Brunswick Harbor -- are expected to bring even more shipping traffic.
