COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) South Carolina's two-deep roster released Tuesday shows a team full of upperclassmen and experience at the skilled positions.
Offensive coordinator Skip Holtz says he was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in the offensive line, while he thinks the receivers need a little more work.

Defensive coordinator Charlie Strong likes what he sees too, even though he lost Kalimba Edwards, Sheldon Brown and other impact players off a unit that was second in the Southeastern Conference in scoring defense.

``We've got some new faces. But, I feel pretty comfortable with what we have,'' Strong said.

The roster provided few surprises for the skilled players on offense. Senior Corey Jenkins is the starting quarterback, and his backup is sophomore Dondrial Pinkins. Seniors Andrew Pinnock and Ryan Brewer will anchor the backfield.

The Gamecocks will continue to spread the offense, Holtz said. But they may get junior tight end Hart Turner more involved. ``I think he's earning his way on to the football field,'' Holtz said.

Sophomore Andrea Gause and senior James Adkisson are penciled in as starters at wide receivers, although Holtz worries the Gamecocks don't have the depth to continue to use four-receiver sets. He also said injuries kept some of the wideouts from showing their full potential.

``It was hard to develop consistency with the injuries,'' Holtz said. ``Andrea Gause has really emerged. He has big-play potential.''

Four of the five starters on the offensive line are seniors, and Holtz said he was impressed with their improvements.

And with time, Holtz said the younger guys backing up the line may be just as good. ``Right now, I think they could go in and spell a starter. By the time the season starts, we'd like to have eight linemen we can depend upon,'' Holtz said.

On defense, Strong says the scheme will remain the same, even if the faces have changed.

``We worked on our third down defense during the spring. We need to improve rushing the passer and our coverage drops,'' Strong said.

One of the most impressive players was George Gause, who has been moved from linebacker to defensive end, Strong said.

``He is a complete player. I just see him getting bigger and bigger,'' Strong said. ``He's already at 250 pounds and he is going to get bigger. He hasn't finished growing yet.''

The biggest surprise in the defensive depth chart was freshman Lance Laury, who Strong said played his way into a starting linebacker spot during spring practice.

``He just made so many plays,'' Strong said. ``Every time you turned around, he was near the football.''

Strong said the spur linebacker might be the strongest position on defense with seniors Rashad Faison and Jonathan Martin set to start.

The depth chart keeps junior Daniel Weaver as kicker and senior Tyler Dean as punter.
