Teen-ager pleads guilty in pickup truck death

By
CANTON - A 17-year-old who was driving a pickup truck when another teen-ager was thrown from the back with a load of lockers has pleaded guilty to reckless driving and failure to secure a load.

Cherokee High School senior Zachary Alan Cochran of Holly Springs was sentenced Monday to 12 months probation, Cherokee County Solicitor General Channing Ruskell said. He also must forfeit his driver's license for six months and complete a defensive driving course.

The charges were filed after Cochran and teammate Joshua Reider, 15, were moving lockers for their school's baseball team Jan. 22, and the pickup crossed over a series of speed bumps, sending Reider and the lockers crashing to the ground. Reider died later that day.
