Student charged with murder seeks reinstatement

ATHENS - A 28-year-old University of Georgia student who is accused of killing her boyfriend is seeking reinstatement to the school to get credit for classes she took this semester.

Julie Zaitseva was summarily dismissed by the university's Office of Judicial Programs on April 15th. That was four days after being charged with shooting 51-year-old Terry Wayne Mathis of Monroe.

Zaitseva's lawyer, Russell Gabriel, said she acted in self-defense after repeated abuse.

Richard Mullendore, vice president for student affairs, said the dismissal was not the same as an expulsion but was an interim suspension.

Mullendore said he expects a decision by early next week. Classes end next week.
