TYBEE ISLAND - Tybee Island residents are not putting out the welcome mat for the thousands of college students who are heading to the island tonight for Orange Crush.
Tybee Police Chief James Price expects as many as 11,000 people -- more than triple Tybee's population -- to come to the island for a weekend of partying.
Each year during Orange Crush, traffic becomes snarled, and partiers climb on top of their cars. Last year, Price said there was a problem with people having sex in cars -- something he said police will watch for this year.
Orange Crush started 13 years ago as an end-of-the-year bash for students at Savannah State University. But the party has become a word-of-mouth event with no promoters.
Price -- who learned on Monday that Orange Crush was this weekend -- has hired 125 officers from five different law enforcement agencies to be on duty.
