The selection was announced at a reception Friday at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Macon. <br>

Margaret Sims, a teacher of English literature at Marietta High School, was runner-up. <br>

Johnson, 41, a North Carolina native, has been teaching for 17 years. She received her bachelor's, master's and specialist degrees in education from the State University of West Georgia and has been listed four times in Who's Who Among American Teachers. <br>

Each of the 180 Georgia public school systems submits one teacher for the state competition. A panel of educators chooses 12 semifinalists, who are interviewed and observed in the classroom to narrow the list to five finalists.
