ROSINVILLE, S.C. - A car slammed into the back of a moving van on a foggy stretch of highway early Monday, causing a chain-reaction pileup that left six people dead, authorities said.
Five of the victims died in a fiery explosion when their car became sandwiched between another car and a tractor trailer rig hauling automobiles, Lance Cpl. Paul Brouthers said. The sixth victim was the driver of the moving van, who was struck while standing on the highway examining the damage to his van.
Names of the victims were not immediately released. The seven-vehicle pileup happened about 2:30 a.m. in the northbound lane of Interstate 95 near Charleston and involved seven vehicles, police said.
Visibility was poor because of fog and smoke from a nearby fire in the woods.
The southbound lanes of the interstate was reopened Monday morning. The northbound lanes were expected to reopen in the afternoon.
