Interim management team named for CDC

ATLANTA - A top official at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has been named acting director as part of an interim management team to lead the agency until a new director is named. <br> <br> CDC director Dr. Jeffrey Koplan is retiring Sunday after 26 years in public service. He has taken a job as vice president for academic health affairs at Emory University. <br> <br> Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said today in Washington that the management team will be made up of Dr. David Fleming, the acting director; Dr. James Hughes and Dr. Julie Gerberding, who will lead the agency&#39;s bioterrorism efforts; and Dr. Michael Osterholm, who will serve as Thompson&#39;s representative at CDC during the transition. <br> <br> Fleming is the CDC deputy director for science and public health. Hughes is the director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases at CDC, and Gerberding is the acting deputy director of the National Center for Infectious Diseases. Osterholm is the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
