ATHENS - A German Shepherd was recovering nicely Friday after receiving a pacemaker donated by an 80-year-old woman who recently died.
Sunshine, who lives with her owner in Buford, was expected to be good as new and headed home shortly after receiving the new machine. Her old pacemaker's battery had been losing power.
The new pacemaker was donated to the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine by Dorothea Edwards. The Athens resident, who died February fourth, wanted to help an animal as much as people.
A spokeswoman for the college said she hopes Edwards' gesture will encourage others to think about donating their pacemakers to the school.
Between ten and 20 dogs are diagnosed with heart conditions every day in the United States and Canada, but few get pacemakers. In the past five years, only two or three people have donated their pacemakers to the college.
