COLLEGE PARK - A police officer shot and killed a man who fled and then fought with him after a traffic stop early Sunday, authorities said.
Derrick Fernando Brown, 35, died at the scene of the shooting near Roosevelt Highway, south of Atlanta, a police report said.
Officer Al Garrett said he pulled over a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo shortly after 1:30 a.m. because it was weaving across the center line, police said. After the truck stopped, Brown and an unidentified passenger ran into the woods.
Garrett caught up with Brown, who punched the officer in the face and then tried to hit him with a flashlight that had fallen to the ground, police said. Garrett then drew his weapon and fired at Brown.
Police did not say why the men might have run from the traffic stop.
