MACON - A flight instructor and his student died Monday after their small plane crashed near Macon Downtown Airport.

Officials of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office and Southeastern Flight School said they were unsure who was piloting the single-engine Piper Warrior when it went down. Skies were clear, but it was windy at the time.

The two were identified as Bhushan Dixit, 28, a Southeastern instructor, and Aubrey L. Minor, 34, of Arley, Ala.

Soon after their takeoff at about 10:35 a.m., the pilot notified airport officials that he was turning back, giving no explanation, Sheriff Jerry Modena said.

That was the last contact with the airport before the plane crashed into a sparse stand of pines that forms a border between a field of sand and thicker woods.
