The name is Sugar Hill

GAINESVILLE - The Hall County School Board settled the issue of naming a new school Monday night. The name of the school being built off Athens Highway will be Sugar Hill Elementary instead of Harmony. The "Name that School" committee had chosen Harmony, but board chairman Richard Higgins noted that had caused "disharmony" among Sugar Hill supporters.

UNIFORMS

Two more Hall County schools plan to uniform their students. One principal said it's a matter of providing a "level playing field."

Have you priced a pair of designer jeans popular with school kids lately? How about sixty to eighty dollars a pair?
Not every student can afford them.

"We have those students who cannot possibly afford that, so this does provide a level playing field," Judy Mahaffee said. She added that uniforms should also help students keep their minds on their studies instead of their clothes.

The McEver Elementary School Principal told school board members Monday night most students want uniforms at her school.
So do students at West Hall Middle School.

NEW PRINCIPALS

Board members learned of several administrative changes during Monday's work session. School Superintendent Dr. Dennis Fordham said he's recommending four principal positions during the regular meeting next Monday night.

"At McEver Elementary School, Dr. Judy Mahaffee is retiring and I'm recommending that Catherine Rosa be principal," Dr. Fordham said.

Dr. Fordham recommended Dr. Debra Smith to replace Dale Barnes, retiring at Riverbend.

Assistant Gwinnett County principal Joe Dennon is recommended to replace the retiring Dianna Mills at Martin Elementary School.

For the new elementary school opening next fall, Assistant White County principal Richard Quarles is recommended as principal.

RENOVATION BIDS

The board heard Dr. Fordham recommend low bids for new school construction. Reliant Construction of Alpharetta had the low bid for the addition at Friendship Elementary School at $676,000. Devcon Construction Company of Marietta was the low bidder of the Sardis Elementary School addition at $654,399.
