DAVIE, FLORIDA - The Dolphins are still hoping to acquire Ricky Williams as their starting running back. But now they have a potential new backup. Robert Edwards has signed a one-year deal with Miami.
Edwards hasn't played in a game since a devastating knee injury following his rookie season with New England in 1998.
The 27-year-old ball carrier tried to come back with the Patriots last year but was hobbled by a groin injury and released August 24. He rushed for over a thousand yards with the Pats in '98 but suffered nerve, ligament and artery damage in his left knee the following February in a beach football game that was part of the Pro Bowl festivities.
Meanwhile, the Dolphins have offered the New Orleans Saints three draft picks for Williams, including at least one first-round choice, and trade talks are expected to continue Thursday.
