CHICKAMAUGA - A 3-year-old boy remained in critical condition Friday at an Ohio burn center after suffering burns in a Walker County house fire that killed his 4-year-old sister.
Garrett Whaley had second-and-third degree burns over 40 percent of his body after a fire broke out in the house early Thursday. His sister, Morgan Whaley, was found dead when firefighters arrived.
The children's mother, Holly Whaley, and her boyfriend, Curtis Smith, had climbed out a bedroom window to safety, Walker County Fire Chief Randy Camp said. Smith tried to go back in the house and authorities handcuffed him for his own safety.
Garrett was transported to T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. and later to the Cincinnati Shriners Hospital in Ohio.
Camp said the fire apparently was caused by a heater in the hallway. The heater was expected to be sent to the insurance company for inspection. Camp said the house did not have a smoke alarm.
