CONYERS - Officials of the state Environmental Protection Division certified Rockdale County's new water plant Monday to purify 22.1 million gallons a day, an increase of more than 6 million from the original design.
After years of buying drinking water from neighboring counties, Rockdale officials planned to turn the valve Tuesday morning to bring locally treated water into the distribution system.
The extra capacity was made possible through value-engineering before construction and minor improvements, which did not increase cost of the $59 million project that includes 19 miles of water mains, miles of extensions, two water tanks and an intake pump on Big Haynes Creek.
County water customers currently use 12 million gallons of water on the peak day of the year.
