Tech,Piedmont, Southern win in baseball; prep tourneys on tap

It was a winning Sunday on the diamonds for the State's baseball teams from Georgia Tech, Piedmont, and Georgia Southern.<br>

The Yellowjackets beat Winthrop 8-1. Gainesville High alum Victor Menocal had a 2-for-3 game with two runs scored.<br>
<br>
Freshman Clifton Remole homered and had 2RBI for Tech (13-1) in the win.<br>
<br>
Piedmont went to 12-3 on the season after they edged out Oglethorpe in a 10-9 slugout on the road.<br>
<br>
Eric Dell had a sterling day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI. Joe Durksi also joined the hit parade going 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Daryl Stoval went 2-for-4 with an RBI.<br>
<br>
Terry Roberson got the win for the Lions.<br>
<br>
North Georgia College and State University took two out of three from Brewton-Parker over the weekend in conference play.<br>
<br>
The Saints opened Friday with an 11-8 win, and followed it on Saturday with a 3-2 victory. The Saints dropped the finale Sunday 10-4.<br>
<br>
North Georgia is 17-11 overall, 3-2 in the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference while Brewton is 7-16, 2-3 in the GACC.<br>

Jason Elkins (4-0) got a win and a save for the Saints in games one and two.<br>
<br>
North Georgia LF Nick Deckon went 5-for-11 with 4RBI and two runs scored in the three-game series.<br>
<br>
Also Sunday, Georgia Southern shut-out VMI 9-0.<br>
<br>
On the high school diamonds, tournament action continues Monday.<br>
<br>
East Hall and Gainesville will battle at the Ivey-Watson Tournament after Buford faces North Forsyth.<br>
<br>
North Hall hosts Blessed Trinity in the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament.<br>
<br>
Elsewhere in Monday baseball, Riverside is slated to host Apalachee; while Johnson is scheduled at Habersham Central; and Lumpkin County is set to host Wesleyan.<br>
<br>
Also on the prep schedule Monday, the Northeast Georgia Mountains Tournament Cup soccer tourney gets underway with girls' action this week, Lakeview takes on Habersham, and West Hall hosts Stephens County.<br>
<br>
In regular season play, Gainesville's boys are scheduled to host Greater Atlanta Christian.<br>
<br>
In the Hall County Tennis Tournament, Johnson plays at East Hall and North Hall hosts West Hall.<br>
