ALBANY - The Wilmington Waves, a class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, are moving to Albany for the upcoming South Atlantic League season.
The Albany City Commission unanimously approved a three-year agreement Wednesday with the team, which will play at the city's Paul Eames Sports Complex. Their first home game against Savannah is scheduled for April eighth.
Team owner David Heller told the Albany Herald the team will have a ``name the team contest'' during the season. Albany Mayor Tommy Coleman said he doubted the team could change its uniforms in time for the team's first home game.
Coleman said, ``We're pleased that we have this opportunity to have a quality organization in our community. We think it'll be a great marriage. It's clear they're experienced and have been successful in operating baseball clubs in many areas of the country. They're obviously financially sound and that's certainly an advantage.''
This will be Albany's second venture into the South Atlantic League after the Albany Polecats left in 1995. Albany also briefly hosted the Colorado Silver Bullets and last year provided a home for the Albany Alligators of the All American Association, an independent minor league.
Moving vans started arriving at the Eames Complex Tuesday. Heller, who plans to be in Albany later this week, said some of the team's staff already is in Albany.
