LAWRENCEVILLE - A 13-year-old boy died after he jumped in front of a Go Kart and was thrown against a brick mailbox, striking his neck on a sharp edge, Gwinnett County police said.
Neighbors told police Thursday that the boy was playing chicken and either failed to get out of the way in time or jumped in the wrong direction, police spokesman Cpl. Ray Dunlap said. The teen-ager's name was withheld until Friday. He attended Shiloh Middle School.
Two girls, 14 and 15, were riding in the mini-car. One girl was bruised and scraped when it overturned, but neither was hospitalized. Their names also were not released.
Dunlap said it is illegal to ride a Go Kart on a public street, although no charges were filed Thursday night.
