Sgt. Michael Santiago of Batas, Puerto Rico was transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center from Winn Army Community Hospital at Fort Stewart, according to the Fort Stewart public affairs office.
On Friday, Pfc. Craig Jones walked into the orderly room of the 226th Medical Supply Company at the base just outside Savannah and shot Santiago in the chest and arm as the soldiers prepared for a morning workout.
Jones, from Newbury Park, Calif., then shot and killed himself.
Both soldiers were water purification specialists, officials said.
Jones used a .45-caliber pistol that had been bought off-post, said Lt. Col. David Van Laar, Fort Stewart provost marshal and commander of the 3rd Military Police Battalion.
Military police are still investigating the case.
