KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - Kansas City signed 41-year-old placekicker Morten Andersen to a one-year contract Monday, the same day Chiefs free agent Todd Peterson agreed to three-year deal with Pittsburgh.

Kansas City did not release terms of the deal with Andersen, but The Kansas City Star reported it was for $750,000.

The 20-year veteran kicked last year for the New York Giants, making 23 of 28 field goals, with a long of 51 yards, and 29 of 30 extra points.

Andersen, a native of Denmark, is the NFL's second-leading career scorer with 2,036 points. He began his career in New Orleans in 1982 before joining the Atlanta Falcons in 1995.

``He's been a great kicker,'' coach Dick Vermeil said of Andersen. ``Hopefully, we can get another good year out of him, or more.''

Peterson, who signed a $2.5 million contract with the Steelers on Monday, made 27 of 35 field goals with the Chiefs last season. But he missed two 28-yard attempts in close games.

``He's been a good kicker, but he missed some critical field goals last year,'' Vermeil said. ``All kickers miss some now and then. He's been good. He might get better. We're trying to squeeze as much as we can out of our cap. It comes down to dollars and those kinds of things.''

The Chiefs negotiated with the nine-year veteran before the free-agency period began, but made no offers until Monday, after their kicker of the last two seasons had visited Cincinnati, Minnesota and Pittsburgh.

Peterson entered the league as a seventh round draft pick of the Giants in 1993.
