Braves offer portable TV rentals at Turner Field

By
ATLANTA - What can fans sitting in the Turner Field bleachers do if a game turns boring this summer? Just change the channel.

Fans will be able to rent a wireless portable television, called The Insider, that gives them the benefits of watching at home such as choosing from several camera angles, viewing instant replays on demand, or changing channels to another game, cartoons or the news.

Atlanta entrepreneur Taz Anderson will introduce The Insider this summer at the home of the Atlanta Braves, billing the device as the first remote control for live sports.

``What we're trying to give people is the same control you have at home with your clicker,'' says Anderson, a former Georgia Tech and Atlanta Falcons football player. ``When fans go to a game, they won't miss anything they'd want to see at home.''

The Insider looks like a View-Master or a pair of binoculars and uses a battery-powered receiver to pick up the telecast and audio.

Users can choose from seven channels: four for the live game, one for another game, one for a news channel and one for cartoons enough to cover the interests of most fans, Anderson says.

His Atlanta-based company, Immersion Entertainment, will pay networks for the use of their programming.

Turner Field will be the first stadium to test The Insider and will initially have about 200 of the devices available, increasing to about 2,000 during the season.

Anderson hopes to offer them at Georgia Tech and Falcons games this fall and move next year into stadiums and arenas in other cities, the NASCAR circuit and professional golf events.

Fans will rent the patented devices for $20 at kiosks around the stadium, but Anderson's long-term goal is to sell them directly to consumers, who could then use them at any game where the service is offered on a pay-per-view basis.
