A third of the detainees at Guantanamo begin hunger strike, U.S. military says

By
GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba - Around 100 detainees held at this remote military outpost have launched a hunger strike, refusing to eat breakfast Thursday, officials said.

The inmates first refused their "culturally appropriate" dinners on Wednesday night and then declined breakfast, said Marine Maj. Stephen Cox, a spokesman for the detention mission at Guantanamo.

Other details, including the reason for the strike, were not immediately available. Cox said the strike involved a third of the prisoners at the base, who total 300.

The military says the prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are fighters of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network -- which is accused in the Sept. 11 terror attacks in the United States -- and the deposed Afghan Taliban regime that harbored it.

Since the prisoners arrived at the camp last month, officials have said the men pose a danger to the troops and are willing to die or kill themselves.

The prisoners have been brought in stages to the base on the eastern tip of Cuba since early January from Afghanistan, where the military says they were captured fighting alongside the Taliban or al-Qaida.
