AUGUSTA - An Augusta couple have been accused of tying up and beating the woman's 7-year-old son and burning him with matches.
Patrice Polite, 22, and her live-in boyfriend, Calvin Cook, 26, were in the Richmond County jail Monday charged with cruelty to children, sheriff's investigator Lee Wood said.
The child received the injuries the weekend of Jan. 19-20, and the pair were arrested Friday, Wood said.
Officers estimate there were as many as 50 older and healing injuries on the child's body. Doctors initially thought many of those injuries were bug bites, but once he was removed from the home and placed in foster care, the boy told officials they were match burns, said Maj. Ken Autry.
``He indicated he was struck with various objects such as cords, burned with matches and immersed in hot water,'' Autry said. ``Some burns, we suspect, were caused by an iron."
