ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines canceled several hundred flights scheduled for Wednesday as forecasters expect sleet and freezing rain to affect travel in much of the Southeast.
The National Weather Service has forecast a 100 percent chance of precipitation for middle and northern Georgia Wednesday with temperatures in the 30s for much of the day.
Similar weather is expected in much of Alabama and South Carolina, with snow likely in Tennessee and parts of western North Carolina, the weather service said.
The airline has canceled several hundred flights between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, said Delta spokeswoman Peggy Estes.
Besides Atlanta, Delta said the weather will affect its operations in Charlotte, N.C., Dallas-Fort Worth, Greenville, S.C., Huntsville, Ala., Jackson, Miss., Little Rock, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., Monroe, La., Nashville, Tenn. and Oklahoma City.
"It's a fluid situation," Estes said, with additional flight cancellations possible. The airline is urging travelers to check the status of flights on its Web site or telephone at 800-325-1999.
AirTran Airways has scrubbed four flights through Wednesday with additional possible, company spokesman Tad Hutcheson said.
Delta operates its largest hub at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport and hopes to avoid the sort of operational mess that befell its schedule Jan. 3 when a storm left nearly 5 inches of snow on the area. Hundreds of passengers were stranded on planes for up to 10 hours as de-icing crews were unable to keep pace with the weather.
Delta has 2,170 daily flights, with 597 of those from Atlanta.
