Former Tech star Marbury arrested for DUI

By
SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA - Phoenix Suns point guard Stephon Marbury was arrested Friday on a charge of driving under the influence.

Marbury played for Georgia Tech in 1996, the year the team went to the Sweet 16. He also was the named ACC Rookie of the Year.

A Scottsdale police spokesman said an officer followed Marbury because he appeared to be speeding, then watched as the car began weaving.

Police say Marbury was clocked at 75 miles per hour in a 50 mile-per-hour zone, and when he pulled over the officer found his speech was slurred and his breath smelled like alcohol.

Police say a portable breath test showed Marbury had a blood alcohol level of point-one-five-three. That is almost twice the legal limit in Arizona.

Marbury was booked into the city jail on charges of extreme D-U-I, D-U-I and speeding. Extreme D-U-I means the person had a blood alcohol level of at least point-one-five and carries harsher penalties.

Marbury was held for about two hours and released. He issued a statement taking responsibility for his actions and apologizing.

Suns president Bryan Colangelo, who was in Philadelphia for the All-Star game, says the team will act after the details become known.

Marbury was acquired by the Suns last year from the New Jersey Nets.
