Teen gets 12 years for shooting spree

By
ATHENS - A 17-year-old boy was sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting up cars, homes and empty schools in a weekend spree a year ago that sent bullets whizzing inches from a sleeping woman and a baby's crib.

The sentence came Friday after Adam Dwayne Smith was convicted in Clarke County Superior Court of 11 charges including criminal damage to property and reckless conduct. He was acquitted of six counts of aggravated assault.

Smith and two other teens fired into two occupied houses as part of the three-day spree in February 2001, according to court testimony. One bullet from Smith's rifle lodged in a headboard 6 inches above the head of a sleeping woman, and another landed feet from the crib of a 3-month-old girl.

According to court testimony, Smith later told police: ``I wasn't trying to hurt nobody. I mean, we was just wanting to shoot stuff.''

The other teens pleaded guilty last week. Geoffrey Steven Betts was sentenced to 20 years with the first 10 years in confinement, and Viktor Wesley Stearnes was ordered to serve five years in prison and seven years on probation.
