Johnson showed why he was the fastest throughout winter testing at the two and a-half mile oval. He had a top lap of 185.831 mph to outduel Kevin Harvick.
Harvick was 61-hundredths of a mile slower than Johnson, who's just the third rookie to win the Daytona pole. Mike Skinner and Loy Allen Junior are the others.
Fifty-three drivers made it onto the track in the first of two rounds at the time trials. Only Johnson and Harvick have wrapped up spots.
