BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - The one-game suspensions of Georgia's Steve Thomas and Auburn's Kyle Davis for fighting in the Tigers' 75-72 upset victory Saturday over the No. 21 Bulldogs was upheld Monday by the Southeastern Conference.
Both players were ejected with about two minutes left in the game.
The melee started after Thomas hit Davis with an elbow under the basket, and the Auburn center responded with a punch to the head. Thomas also appeared to take a swing and chased Davis toward the Auburn bench, where several players scuffled and two referees fell to the floor.
The SEC suspended both players for one game for flagrant fighting under NCAA rules.
SEC Commissioner Roy Kramer reviewed videotape of the incident Monday and said the decision to suspend the players for one game would stand, said league spokesman Charles Bloom.
Thomas will miss Georgia's next game against No. 6 Florida (18-4 overall, 7-3 in the SEC) in Athens on Tuesday night. Georgia (18-6, 7-4) beat Florida in Gainesville 84-79 on Jan. 19. Auburn (10-11, 2-8) will be without Davis for its game Wednesday at home against Mississippi.
