Witnesses said the whale, which appeared to be wounded, was struggling in the sand as it tried to get back to deeper water.
Most onlookers were too stunned at the site to do much. But a few others braved the bone chilling 53-degree waters to help the struggling whale. Their efforts to move help move the approximately 1,200 pound mammal.
After drifting out and nearly beaching itself again, the whale finally made its way back out to sea. Tybee officials say they'll be keeping an eye on the coastal waters in case the whale returns.
