SPRINGFIELD - A Guyton man was convicted of involuntary manslaughter by an Effingham County jury for shooting his father four times and then bludgeoning him with an ax on Father's Day.
Lance Roberson, 19, is to be sentenced next month in the June 17, 2001, slaying of 61-year-old Erven Roberson.
Lance Roberson also was convicted Friday of having a weapon during the commission of a crime. He faces up to 20 years in prison for each conviction.
Investigators said the elder Roberson had been drinking with a friend when he came home and began arguing with his son. Lance Roberson claimed he acted in self-defense after the elder man attacked him with a pocketknife. He then struck his father on the head.
``The whole argument was stupid to lead to such a violent ending,'' prosecutor Tony May said.
Guyton is about 25 miles northwest of Savannah.
