WASHINGTON - The D.C. Boxing and Wrestling Commission has taken the first step in granting Mike Tyson a license.
The three-member panel voted to move forward but a public hearing will be held next month before a license is granted.
At a news conference, which drew protests from about a dozen sign-bearing members of the National Organization for Women, the commissioner retracted his earlier statement.
He had said Tyson had a license but he later characterized the morning vote as little more than a straw poll to get the licensing process started.
Nevada denied Tyson a license last month after a melee at a New York news conference to announce his bout with champion Lennox Lewis.
