WASHINGTON - Danny Wuerffel and Steve Spurrier are about to be reunited with the Washington Redskins.

A source close to Wuerffel, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the journeyman quarterback was told by the Houston Texans, who took him in the expansion draft, that a trade with Washington is done.

It's the Texans' first trade.

Wuerffel, the third-string quarterback for Chicago last season, won the 1996 Heisman Trophy playing at Florida for Spurrier, who was hired by Washington last month to replace Marty Schottenheimer.

But Wuerfell's NFL career has been undistinguished in stints with New Orleans, Green Bay and the Bears. He led the Frankfurt Rhein Fire to the 2000 NFL Europe title.

Last week, Spurrier signed another ex-Florida player, wide receiver Chris Doering.

Wuerffel hasn't thrown an NFL pass since 1999. In his career, he is 126-of-258 for 1,404 yards with nine touchdowns and 16 interceptions.

Had he remained with the Texans, Wuerffel would have competed with Mike Quinn for the No. 3 quarterback spot.

If Houston chooses Fresno State quarterback David Carr with the top overall pick in the draft, he probably will begin the season as the backup behind a veteran most likely acquired through free agency.
