ALBANY - An 82-year-old woman was killed in a house fire that started in a fireplace.
The woman, Lorene Mabry, of Albany, was alone in the house when the fire broke out at about 10 p.m. Wednesday. The owner of the house, Arthur Graddy, her nephew, was not home at the time.
Fire officials said Mabry and Graddy had been using the fireplace as their only source of heat.
Deputy Chief James Carswell of the Albany Fire Department said over the years the fireplace had deteriorated.
It took firefighters more than an hour bring the fire under control. The house, valued at $95,000, is a complete loss.
