A cold front that swept through the South kept Georgia in its grasp Thursday, pushing temperatures to record lows at some locations as forecasters warned that more wintry weather was in store. <br>

Forecasters were encouraging people to prepare for at least one more frosty night before temperatures were expected to climb back into the 50s by the weekend. <br>

Temperatures in the Atlanta area, Athens and Augusta reached a low of 18 degrees early Thursday, while spots in northwest Georgia were up to several degrees colder. <br>

Macon had a low of 19, breaking its record for the date of 20 set in 1920. Columbus tied its record low of 22, set in 1963. <br>

In the Atlanta area, Marietta recorded a low of 16 and Peachtree City reached a low of just 13. But a break from gusting winds made Thursday's low temperatures feel more bearable. <br>

Along the coast, Savannah registered a low of 20 and Brunswick bottomed out at 26. <br>

Baughn Smith, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the state will have another icy morning Friday. <br>
<br>
Smith said Macon and Columbus, which registered highs of 39 degrees Wednesday, were expected to experience lows of around 20 early Friday. <br>
<br>
Extreme elevations in the northwest mountains and far north Georgia may see some snow flurries. <br>
<br>
By midday Friday, a short reprieve is expected.
