AUGUSTA - A man got in a gunfight with police and was shot three times while they were investigating a separate shooting, according to the Richmond County Sheriff's Department.
Benny Bauknight, 44, was in critical condition Friday after undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds to the abdomen and left elbow. Investigator Dan Carrier, 33, was treated and released for a shot in his leg.
Police said they were looking for a suspect in a separate shooting when they came to the boarding house where Bauknight was.
When Carrier and two deputies tried to listen for someone in the room of the boarding house, Bauknight opened the door and shot Carrier in the leg with a .22-caliber rifle, said Sheriff Ronnie Strength.
Carrier returned fire with his .40-caliber Glock pistol.
Strength said he found nothing wrong with the way Carrier reacted.
Carrier has been placed on paid leave while the Georgia Bureau of Investigation looks into the shooting.
