ATLANTA - Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington has called for an investigation nearly two years after an internal audit showed 34 rape cases hadn't been reported.
Pennington named his Criminal Investigations Division head to conduct the inquiry.
An audit into the underreporting was ordered in February 2001 and found 34 reports placed in a secret file.
Deputy Chief C-B Jackson now retired ordered the audit, and at the time, he said all 34 cases were investigated.

He said he reassigned all the cases to detectives for follow up investigation. Jackson also said if detectives believes the victims were lying, they put the report in the special file instead of assigning a case number.
A Georgia Bureau of Investigation probe revealed that 498 robberies and 56 rapes were omitted from the 1996 crime statistics for Atlanta.
