ALBANY - A hearing is scheduled Monday night to decide whether a popular high school math teacher charged with murder in the death of his father 12 years ago will be allowed to continue teaching.
Fifty-three-year-old William Scheer -- a teacher at Monroe High School -- has been released from jail on house arrest.
Scheer was arrested last month on murder charges in the death of 83-year-old William Henry Scheer, a retired Bell Telephone Laboratories inventor.
According to news reports at the time, the father's body was found Sept. 13, 1990, in a bedroom chair by two maids, dead from an apparent blow to the head from a golf club. Police said there were no signs of forced entry.
A judge set bond at $65,000 last week and agreed that Scheer could be released as long as he remained on house arrest and wore an electronic monitoring device.
