BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA - Gil Grimes was named Monday as an assistant commissioner of the Southeastern Conference. <br>

Commissioner Mike Slive said Grimes, currently an associate commissioner with the Southern Conference, will work with SEC schools in NCAA compliance matters. <br>
<br>
Slive said, ``He comes to the SEC with a solid background in NCAA compliance matters. He will be able to serve our institutions with his breadth of experience and knowledge.'' <br>
<br>
Grimes spent seven years at the Southern Conference, where he aided member institutions with compliance programs and eligibility programs for student athletes. He comes to a conference where two football programs, Alabama and Kentucky, are currently on probation, and others have been investigated in recent years. <br>
<br>
The 39-year-old Grimes earned a bachelor's degree at Birmingham-Southern, where he had a baseball scholarship, and a law degree from the University of Alabama. He also holds a master's degree from St. Thomas University in Miami.
