ALBANY - Police say a phony insurance policy was behind the attempted murder of a southwest Georgia woman last year, and one of two people indicted in the plot has been arrested.
Joey Harris, 46, of Leesburg, was arrested this week by sheriff's deputies on several fraud charges after his September indictment in the near-fatal beating of Stephanie Prather.
Police say that Harris and 36-year-old Gloria Ann Loud planned to kill Prather with a baseball bat and then collect on forged and fraudulent insurance policies that named Loud as a beneficiary.
Loud has been charged with aggravated assault with intent to kill for the April 29, 2001, beating of Prather. The woman has mostly recovered from her injuries, District Attorney Ken Hodges said.
