Twenty-seven-year-old Ricardo Arriaga-Gutierrez pleaded guilty yesterday and faces up to 18 years in prison when he is sentenced November 20.
Randy Burris, a 39-year-old father of three, saved a baby girl and her mother when he pushed them out of the way of a speeding car. He posthumously received the Carnegie Medal for Extraordinary Heroism.
Heather Carlson was taking her two-month-old daughter Nyah for a stroll when she met Burris standing outside his house. As they were chatting, an out-of-control car veered around a curve.
Burris grabbed the stroller and shoved Carlson out of the way. He was struck by the car and the baby was sent flying from her stroller, but she was not hurt. Burris died two days after the crash.
Prosecutors said Arriaga-Gutierrez had a blood alcohol level of 0.245 at the time. The legal limit is 0.08. He also pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and driving without proof of insurance or a driver's license.
