Police ask for help in student's death

ATHENS - Nearly two years after a University of Georgia law student was found dead in her burning home, police have released clues and asked for the public's help in finding her killer.

Athens-Clarke County police said Friday they're looking for a man who was seen running away from her apartment on Jan. 19, 2001, when 23-year-old Tara Baker's body was found in a rear bedroom of her burning apartment. Police also are seeking a laptop computer Baker was given before she died.

Capt. James Williams said a witness might remember a man running without a coat at 7:30 on a winter morning.

``That's one of the things that stood out as we were looking through the case. We know that that would be an unusual circumstance,'' he said. ``That's the best description that the witness provided.''

Investigators also want to talk to anyone who bought a laptop matching Baker's, a Compaq Presario Model 1200 XL 118. It's the only valuable known to be missing from Baker's apartment.
