Police say 15-year-old Jake Ewing McBee of Clayton County died Saturday morning of a bullet wound to the head.
Witnesses told police several teenagers were in a home near Hampton on Friday and that McBee found the gun on top of an entertainment center in the living room.
The witness told police McBee raised the handgun to the right side of his head and fired.
Police at first thought the shooting was a suicide.
But police Lieutenant Jeff Turner said Monday that McBee apparently had played with guns in a similar way before with friends and believed the gun was not loaded.
Police say no charges will be filed.
