Historic Hall sewer accord

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Hall County commissioners Monday will get their first look at a $15 million sewer agreement between the county and the city of Gainesville.

County commission chairman Gary Gibbs said Wednesday the agreement targets the Georgia 365 corridor north and east of Gainesville.

Gibbs said the pact is a "monumental" step in the development of a county sewer system.

"This will be Hall County's first step into having sewer for unincorporated Hall County," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said the sewage will be treated by the city, and the county will, over the years, pay the city $15 million for the service and to help upgrade city treatment plants. Initially, the county will buy one million gallons of treatment capacity.

"Everyone wins in this particular stiuation," Gibbs added. "The people who are going to be living in that area, the towns close to it, like Clermont, like Lula."

Gibbs said the sewer service that will be provided along the Georgia 365 corridor will target industrial-commercial users. He said the first phase will cover the area from "mile marker 24" to Georgia Highway 52 near Lula. In the future, Gibbs said, the service would be extended to the Hall-Habersham county line.

The plan will be unveiled at Monday's county commission works session.
