APPLING - Four teenagers have been accused of abducting a 63-year-old man whose body was found in the trunk of a burning car in South Carolina.
Shannon Devon Patton, 17, Randy Allen Conrad II, 17, and Marcus Torez McCord, 18, all of Martinez, and a 16-year-old from Augusta are charged with kidnapping, auto theft and burglary, Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.
The four were being held without bond Wednesday in the county jail. Morris said it was too early to comment on a motive.
Police said Patton is the stepson of Jack A. Murray, 63, whose burning Mercedes was discovered Monday on a logging road in Sumter National Forest, near the McCormick County-Edgefield County line in South Carolina.
Although authorities suspect that the body was Murray's, Columbia County authorities said they consider him ``missing and endangered'' until they have a positive identification.
Murray divorced Patton's mother in 2000. They married in November 1997 and separated 10 months later. Each accused the other of abuse.
The Edgefield County Coroner's Office said the victim died of smoke inhalation, carbon monoxide poisoning and burning. Coroner Thurmond Burnett said there may be a positive identification by Thursday.
