ATLANTA - Abandoment charges against a man who claimed to have found a newborn in a parking lot were dropped after authorities decided he was trying to place the infant in good hands.

A municipal judge dismissed the charge Thursday against Eddie Stephens, 60, and Jeanette L. Worrell, 34, the mother.

Stephens said he found the girl wrapped in towels Sept. 16 behind the printing business where he worked as a deliveryman. He and Worrell were arrested in October after authorities determined the story was untrue.

Stephens still faces a misdemeanor charge of making a false report of a crime.

After interviewing Worrell, police alleged that Stephens fathered the child. He admitted an affair with Worrell but denied being the father.

City Solicitor Raines Carter said welfare officials are working toward getting the baby adopted by her foster parents.
